An international study involving 11 countries, including Japan, the United States and some European countries looked at the genome of 962 people with kidney cancer. This is the largest study of its kind to sequence the genome of kidney cancer patients.

Over the past 10 years or so, the use of immunotherapies has improved the survival of people with advanced kidney cancer.

This study looks at real-world data to determine the time to when the treatment stops working and the cancer starts growing again (progression-free survival) and overall survival times and to identify factors that could predict the outcome of patients treated with immunotherapy combinations as a first-line treatment.

To date, there have not been any studies that have compared second-line treatments for patients with kidney cancer that has spread (metastatic kidney cancer). This study looked at real-world data to compare the effectiveness of cabozantinib and axitinib (both tyrosine kinase inhibitors) as second-line treatments in patients with metastatic kidney cancer who had previously been treated with a combination of immunotherapies, nivolumab plus ipilimumab.

Researchers are looking for better ways to diagnose kidney cancer. There is an unmet need for an accurate test to diagnose kidney cancer to guide patient care and treatment. Researchers have developed a new imaging agent that can accurately diagnose kidney cancer much faster using PET scans.
