A monoclonal antibody used in the treatment of kidney cancer that has spread (advanced kidney cancer). It works by preventing the growth of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) into a solid tumour, thereby starving the tumour of nutrients and oxygen needed for growth. Avastin is a type of angiogenesis inhibitor. Bevacizumab is the chemical (or generic) name of the drug, while Avastin is the brand (or trade) name under which the drug is licensed and sold.
